The ST44 locomotive is a heavy diesel freight locomotive manufactured in the USSR at the Lugansk locomotive works. It arrived in Poland in the late 1960s, where it earned the nickname "Gagarin" due to its Soviet origin and massive appearecnce. Equipped with an engine with a power of about 2000 HP, it is characterized by low maximum speed but high tractive effort, making it ideal for transporting heavy freight trains. Its characteristic horn and exhaust trail made it one of the most recognizable PKP locomotives.
